So as we enter the new year we find ourselves looking at how DanceSyndrome have been doing over the last year. We have produced our Annual Report and the results are extremely positive putting us in a great position for the year ahead. We are very excited for what’s to come here at DanceSyndrome but if you would like to have a look at what has been achieved in 2013/14, take a look at our Annual Report below.
2014 Annual Report – Download NowPerformances
Over this year, DanceSyndrome has had a strong focus on performance work and developing our dance technique and choreographic skills through our dance development days. We plan to increase our performance work over the next year, so get ready for what’s to come in 2015!
DanceSyndrome perform at a variety of public and private events that range from community showcases and festivals to conferences, mainly across the Northwest but also throughout the UK. DS opens eyes. A conference and community event allows us to share with you and demonstrate to you the power of dance, our own ways of working, the journey we are on and the outcomes for us and for society. We enjoy working with universities where we can influence students, the future workers in dance or performing arts and social sciences.
In 2013/14 we have delivered performances at:
Preston Pride
A unique opportunity, which saw DanceSyndrome performing in the open air on Preston Flag Market. Originally we were planned to only have a stall but with a gap in the programme our dance leader Peter bravely stepped in to deliver a mass participation section to the hundreds of people that were there!
Linkability 25th Anniversary
Our dance leaders Jen and Peter entertained the crowd at this glamorous black tie event, held at Rivington Barn on 2nd October
Preston Community Day
DanceSyndrome warmed up the crowds brilliantly in what was a true celebration of Preston’s varied communities, held on Preston Flag Market on 30th August. The organisers said “our infectious style got everyone on their feet!!”
Lancashire Health Expo
Everyone was feeling the benefits of our mass participation session held at Blackburn Cathedral on 18th September.
East Lancashire Big Health Day
Another eye opener for the audiences at this health and wellbeing themed day. Held at Hyndburn Leisure Centre on 2nd October.
Carers Festival
DanceSyndrome performed extracts from our Nutcracker inspired piece “Confinement” at this celebration of carers, held at St Johns Minster Preston on 28th November. The piece fit in beautifully with the stunning Church and it gave it a different dynamic, a thoroughly enjoyable performance!!
“The Nutcracker” at Chorley Borough Council
This was the performance that resulted in the conception of “Confinement.” We performed the full piece for the first time at Chorley Town on 5th December as part of
Chorley Sports awards evening. We definitely started the night with a bang and the performance was very well received
UCLan Inclusive Dance Performance
Through our Dance by Example programme, we have developed a partnership with Lisa Simpson, a pioneer in dance and disability. As such we have been invited to perform alongside her as part of an inclusive dance performance at UCLan on 15th December. We have decided to present “Confinement” as we will feel a different dynamic again due to the professional theatre it will be performed in.
Workshops
Over this year, DanceSyndrome have delivered a number of successful workshops. With Christmas and the New Year fast approaching, we wanted to give you a snapshot of what we’ve been up to!!
In a DanceSyndrome workshop everybody matters. We bring you inspiration, you make the magic, others are surprised and find a new respect. We aim to inform and empower you through dance in a creative and fun environment. Workshops are led by two company members, one of whom has learning disabilities. One-off or regular weekly sessions are available. We work with partners to create a programme bespoke to participants needs, using techniques suitable for everyone.
In 2013/14 we have delivered the following workshops:
Pirate Day
Students from 5 different schools gathered at Whiteash School in Oswaldthwistle to attend DanceSyndrome’s Pirate themed movement day. It was a new experience for DanceSyndrome to work with children and one that was enjoyed by all!! Phillipa Conti, Head Teacher at Whiteash said “The children have had a wonderful day, we would love to do it again soon!”
UCLan Workshop
This was a first for DanceSyndrome seeing 3rd year Dance Performance and Teaching students looking at DanceSyndrome’s ethos and style as part of their community dance module. We first visited for a lecture to give some theory around why we do what we do, before running a practical session to give the students a taste. The students were clearly inspired at the end of the day and some have gone on to shadow projects looking at dance and disability. Ruth Spencer, Community Dance Tutor said “I underestimated how inspiring it would be for the students, thank you so much for coming in and giving them a taste of theory in action”
Dance Wednesdays
Our Dance Wednesdays in Hindley, Wigan have been a great success! We are working in partnership with My Life to engage with new participants. This is our longest standing regular workshop and we even had a full evaluation carried out by UCLan students, which showed the sessions to be a huge success! My Life is an innovative social enterprise that connects people with their communities. They help to make lives better for people of all ages who need support to live a good life. One of the support workers told us “Everyone loves coming here, enjoying dance and the atmosphere that is created”

Take a look at the massive impact Peter, Sophie and Sue made at their latest event!!

Our Chairman David Lee would like to say a massive thank you for the support received for his half marathon. He completed the race in 2 hours and 12 mins, which is well inside his target time, and raised just under £700 to help fund the wonderful work we do here at DanceSyndrome!

Fantastic news and not bad for his first ever race! If you missed out on David’s fundraising it’s not too late, you can still donate through our Local Giving page https://localgiving.com/charity/dancesyndrome
Starting on the 14th October 2014 LocalGiving.com will be starting their “Grow your Tenner” campaign.
This is an amazing campaign with all one-time donations up to £10 being matched by LocalGiving and all monthly donations of up to £10 being matched for 6 months.
This is a great way to get the most out of your donations so please help out by making your donations!
More details can be found at the LocalGiving “Grow Your Tenner” website – https://localgiving.com/campaign/gyt
As you may be aware our chairman David Lee will be running a half marathon, if you would like to sponsor him you can donate £10 to our LocalGiving page meaning we will receive £20 towards the Chairman’s Challenge!
Whilst working on our HealthZone project we have been in contact with many different GPs, Health Centres and Clinics. We are therefore delighted to announce that we are now working in partnership with the Lancashire Care NHS Trust. By being on their Affiliate Member list, we can show that we provide a quality service; a service which the NHS has deemed worthy of association!
So keep your eyes open in your doctors surgeries, local A & E departments and health services in your area, DanceSyndrome could be closer than you think!
We have achieved so many life-changing projects over the last five years including dancing live on The One Show in support of Amanda Hart’s Mad March Challenge for Comic Relief (see https://dancesyndrome.co.uk/strictly-does-it/) But, all these successes have required funds to support them. So, this year, as part of our fundraising strategy, I have challenged all members of the DanceSyndrome Management Board to do something individually to raise money to help our cause.
For my part, I am attempting to complete a half-marathon on 5th October 2014 in Bournemouth (see www.run-bmf.co.uk ) As this will be the furthest distance I will have run in 65 years, it will be a significant challenge for me and I will have spent several months pounding the streets in training to complete it. So, please help to make my efforts worthwhile by donating whatever you can at http://localgiving.com/charity/dancesyndrome. You can follow my training progress at @dancesyn_david. Or, better still, come and join me and raise your own contribution to DanceSyndrome’s ongoing success!Wish me luck and thank you for any contribution that you can make!

DanceSyndrome has had a brilliant opportunity to work with the Department of Clinical Psychology at Lancaster University (@LancsDClinPsy). We have been able to run some sessions within the Physical Health and Cognitive Development area of the department.
